This is a jib, or crane, they were what you used to get cool sweeping shots before multirotor aircraft. Still is use of course, but much less than they were when I was using them. This one is on top of snowbird.
Not pictured: me. Also the lady on the bottom stole my sunglasses.

How many PAs did it take to drag that thing up there? I had to set up a jib way out in the woods once. Fucking sucked.

The crew that ran it was only 2. we did get to use the tram though, so that helped.

I like the cut of your jib.
How does the cost of one of these compare to a production quality UAV?
I think these things cost upwards of a thousand. Dunno about rental, though.
I will say one benefit of the jib is that the one downtime is moving the thing, whereas a UAV needs to have battery changes every 10 minutes or so.

Its all about weight capacity, I don't think even a very good UAV would have a lot of luck swinging around a gimbal with a big ENG camera like we were using. Granted, cameras are getting much lighter so the advantage goes to UAV's....unless you crash. I know someone who crashed their 25,000 UAV with about 30 grand worth of camera on board. ooof.

I hate lugging gear...I (and like 8 other people) had to carry a techno crane up Magnums Walkers stairs one time...techno cranes are heavy...
What kind of stuff do you shoot?
